How long should batteries last in my trail camera?

Understanding Trail Camera Battery Life

Estimating battery life for a trail camera can be challenging due to the number of variables that impact power consumption. These include:

How many photos/videos are being taken (more activity = more drain)

Video vs. photo mode (video uses more power)

Use of flash or night vision (IR LEDs use more power)

Camera settings (resolution, delay time, trigger sensitivity)

Weather (cold = quicker battery drain, especially for alkalines)

Battery Recommendations

For optimal performance and longer battery life, we recommend using high-quality alkaline or lithium batteries or our rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs

Extend Battery Life Further

To keep your trail camera running longer in the field, consider using external power sources. Check out our accessories page for what is available!

Options like solar panels are especially helpful for long-term monitoring or remote locations where frequent battery changes are not practical.

Typical Battery Life Range Examples

Standard AA Alkaline Batteries:
1 to 3 months depending on usage and temperature.

Lithium AA Batteries (like Energizer Ultimate Lithium):
Up to 6-12 months — much better for cold weather and high-activity areas.

Rechargeable NiMH AA Batteries:
1 to 3 months, but they don’t hold a charge as long as lithium and can struggle in colder temps.

External Battery Packs or Solar Panels:
Several months to indefinite, depending on setup and sunlight exposure.
